When your air conditioner is running but your home still feels warm, it’s easy to assume the worst. However, an AC that isn’t cooling properly doesn’t always mean the entire system has failed.
In South Florida, where air-conditioning systems work hard against both heat and humidity, several relatively common issues can affect cooling performance. Before assuming you need a major repair or replacement, here are seven things worth checking.
1. Check Your Thermostat Settings
It sounds simple, but inefficient cooling can start with the thermostat. For starters, make sure your system is set to COOL, rather than FAN, and that the temperature setting is below the current indoor temperature.
If your thermostat uses batteries, weak batteries can also cause unexpected behavior. Once you’ve confirmed the settings, give the system a few minutes and see whether cool air begins coming through the vents.
2. Take a Look at Your Air Filter
A dirty or heavily clogged air filter can restrict airflow through your HVAC system. When airflow is restricted, your AC may run longer while struggling to cool the house effectively. It can also place unnecessary strain on the system.
If you can’t remember the last time the filter was changed, it’s definitely worth checking. Particularly, in South Florida, where AC systems can operate frequently for much of the year, filter condition is especially important.
3. Check Whether Air Is Coming From Your Vents
Walk through the home and check the airflow from several vents by considering the following:
- Is the air cool but weak?
- Is it blowing normally but not particularly cold?
- Are some rooms receiving significantly less airflow than others?
These questions are critical as those differences can provide useful clues about what may be happening within the system. Also, make sure furniture, curtains or other household items aren’t blocking your supply or return vents.
4. Check the Outdoor AC Unit
If it’s safe and easily accessible, visually inspect the outdoor unit. Leaves, grass, dirt and other debris can accumulate around the condenser and interfere with proper airflow. You don’t need to dismantle or open anything. Simply make sure the area surrounding the unit isn’t obstructed.
If you notice unusual noises, visible damage, ice or another obvious problem, that’s a good reason to have the system professionally inspected rather than attempting to repair it yourself.
5. Pay Attention to Indoor Humidity
Sometimes the first indication of an AC problem isn’t temperature, it’s humidity. Your air-conditioning system helps remove moisture from indoor air as it cools your home.
If the temperature seems reasonably cool but the house suddenly feels unusually sticky or muggy, the system may not be controlling humidity effectively. In South Florida’s humid climate, that’s something worth paying attention to.
6. Consider How Long the AC Has Been Running
Is your AC turning on and off repeatedly? Or is it running almost continuously without reaching the temperature you’ve selected? Either pattern can indicate that something isn’t operating as efficiently as it should.
The cause could range from airflow restrictions and thermostat issues to refrigerant, electrical or mechanical problems that require professional diagnosis.
7. Know When It’s Time to Call a Professional
There are several things homeowners can safely check themselves. But there is also a point where troubleshooting should stop.
If you’ve checked the thermostat, filter, vents and surrounding area and your home still isn’t cooling properly, it’s time to have the system assessed.
You should also arrange professional service if you notice ice buildup, water where it shouldn’t be, burning smells, unusual electrical behaviour, loud or unfamiliar noises, or a system that repeatedly shuts itself down.
Avoid opening electrical components or attempting refrigerant or mechanical repairs yourself.
Don’t Guess What’s Wrong With Your AC
The goal isn’t to diagnose every HVAC problem yourself. It’s to identify the simple things you can safely rule out and gather useful information about what the system is doing.
